Homebound Box Office Day 1: Ishaan Khatter & Vishal Jethwa’s Film Opens to Modest Response

Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, India’s official entry for the Best International Feature category at the 2026 Oscars, opened to a modest response at the domestic box office. Despite being executive produced by Hollywood veteran Martin Scorsese and jointly backed by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla, the film earned just ₹30 lakh net on its first day.

Day 1 Box Office Performance

Even with international recognition and praise from the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, Homebound could not meet domestic expectations. Early estimates by Scanilk highlighted that the film’s opening fell short compared to the past releases of its lead actors:

  • Ishaan Khatter’s Dhadak had an opening day collection of ₹8.71 crore.

  • Phone Bhoot earned ₹2.05 crore on its release day.

  • Vishal Jethwa’s Salaam Venky recorded ₹45 lakh on the first day.

Film Background

Homebound features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles. The film is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer's article, “Taking Amrit Home”, which revolves around friendship, a pandemic, and a tragic death incident on a highway.

The story follows the journey of a Muslim and Dalit boy aspiring to become policemen, as they attempt to reclaim the dignity denied to them by society due to their surnames.

International Acclaim

The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where both audiences and critics praised its unique storytelling and emotional depth.

With Martin Scorsese as executive producer, and strong backing from Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla, Homebound stands out as one of the most high-profile Indian projects in recent times, combining social relevance with cinematic excellence.
