Netflix vs Anurag Kashyap: Bela Bajaria Responds to “Morally Corrupt” Remark and Explains Netflix India’s Strategy

Netflix vs Anurag Kashyap: The Debate That Sparked an OTT Storm

Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for his fearless storytelling and outspoken nature, has once again stirred controversy. The Sacred Games creator recently criticized Netflix India, labeling it “dishonest and morally corrupt.” According to Kashyap, while international divisions of the platform, such as Netflix UK, have been bold enough to greenlight shows like the award-winning Adolescence, similar content would never get approval in India.

His strong words have triggered widespread debate in the entertainment industry about creative freedom, censorship, and the kind of content that streaming giants promote in India.

Bela Bajaria’s Strong Response

In response to Kashyap’s criticism, Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, defended the streaming giant’s Indian strategy. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Bajaria acknowledged Kashyap’s talent but firmly disagreed with his remarks.

“Netflix India doesn’t cater to just one narrow group. We create shows for all kinds of audiences with different tastes,” she said.

Bajaria also explained that while Adolescence was “undeniable” when Netflix UK first read the script, India’s approach is shaped by its uniquely diverse audience.

India’s Diversity Shapes Netflix’s Content

Bajaria highlighted that India is not one market but many rolled into one. Audiences in different regions have vastly different tastes, which forces Netflix India to experiment with a broad range of genres.

From light-hearted entertainment like The Great Indian Kapil Show, to gritty thrillers like Black Warrant, and controversial documentaries such as The Ba*ds of Bollywood**, the platform is attempting to strike a balance.

This strategy, Bajaria said, ensures that Netflix caters to both mass audiences looking for comedy and drama, as well as niche viewers seeking experimental or edgy content.

Anurag Kashyap’s Ongoing Disappointment

This isn’t the first time Anurag has spoken against Netflix India. Earlier, he voiced his frustration on Instagram, claiming that the Indian wing would never support a show like Adolescence.

His words reflect the larger concern among Indian filmmakers—that despite the rise of OTT platforms, creative freedom remains limited when it comes to bold or unconventional storytelling in India.

Kashyap’s criticism also sheds light on the struggle many independent creators face in trying to bring raw, experimental stories to mainstream audiences through major platforms.

The Bigger Picture: Indian OTT Industry at a Crossroads

The Netflix–Anurag Kashyap clash symbolizes a broader conflict within the Indian entertainment landscape. While global OTT platforms want to expand in India, they are also cautious about cultural sensitivities, political pressures, and audience expectations.

This raises important questions: Should platforms focus on safe, mass-friendly content, or should they take risks to nurture bold, experimental cinema like Sacred Games once did?

For now, one thing is clear—the debate has opened a fresh dialogue on the future of creative freedom in Indian OTT storytelling.
